President’s Letter

We have had another very busy month since the June meeting. Most importantly, 7 of our Board Members went to Kansas City to meet with most of the officers of the Kansas City Guild which has about 900 members. Besides discussing a multitude of topics with their leaders, we were able to tour their impressively equipped 12,000 square foot shop while trying not to drool too much! We are all filled with ideas on how to improve our Guild. We will be exploring and organizing our thoughts over the next several months to see how many things that led to their success could apply to us in our current situation. We will keep everyone informed as decisions are made.

You will all be receiving a short survey in the near future which should only take about 5-7 minutes to complete. Please take this survey seriously as the results will affect the decisions we make regarding the future of our Guild! Please contact me if you have questions or suggestion.

SUGGESTED SLWG BYLAWS REVISIONS TO BE VOTED ON AT THE AUGUST GENERAL GUILD MEETING

Article 5
Section 4 –  delete (Twenty-five percent (25%) of the members of the Guild shall constitute a quorum)
 
Article 7
Committees and Appointments
 
Existing Section Article 7 (grammar corrections)
Section 5: The Guild shall equip and maintain a woodworking shop for use by members and for conducting education and training classes for members. It The woodworking shop shall be operated by a Shop Committee, composed of three or more members appointed by the President with the approval of the Executive Board. The committee shall develop a set of policies governing the use of the Shop and shall name a Shop Manager to oversee the implementation of the policies and handle the day-to-day activities of the Shop.
 
New sections to add to Article 7
Section 9: Upon receipt of membership dues and completion of a workshop safety class, members will have the full privilege to use the woodworking shop during open shop hours.  All members have the responsibility to be aware of their surroundings and the inherent risks while in and around the woodworking shop.  If a member appears to not be able to adhere to, or is not attentive to safe tool usage, the member may either have their privileges restricted to hand tool usage only or the member may be permanently banned from shop tool usage. 
 
Section 10: The woodworking shop is equipped for conducting educational and teaching classes for members, and member’s personal usage.  Member’s personal usage does not extend to allowing the woodworking shop to be used to support any member’s business use.

SEPTEMBER  Picnic and Tour

The annual picnic is scheduled for September 9 at Faust Park Picnic Area #2 and has been posted to the website. The picnic will begin at 11:30 AM.  The park is  on Olive Blvd north of I-64/US 40.  Our reserved picnic area is the #2 picnic area.  Parking is available on the east side of the park.
 
A tour of the historic buildings at the Faust Park will begin at 1:00 PM.
 
The guild will provide the main course (fried chicken), drinks, and paper products.  Please bring a covered dish of your own to share.  You may also want to bring fold-up chairs. Please register for this event so we know how much food to have.
 
We are still looking for volunteers to assist with the picnic.  Send email to Bill Schuchat at [email protected] if you are willing to help.

Forming  a Training Committee

 

Looking for Volunteers for the Committee.  So you can influence what classes are offered.  We want to plan classes for the entire 2024 year.

Also looking for Volunteers to teach a Skill Building Class or a Project Class.

Bob Kastigar used up some small blocks of  basswood for good carving practice as well as an interesting structure.  He says it looks like his dad’s castle in the aquarium.

Jeff Nassar brought in this 14″ snakewood pepper mill.  He said that this species is a tough wood to turn, that it splinters profusely.  He inserted a holly inlay and applied a lacquer finish.

Keith Lissant brought in this bow knife for slicing bread.  This is one of the many items that he makes and sells for craft fairs.  The bow knife is made from rosewood and finished with a food safe finish.  He procures the cutting blades online.

Dan Sudkamp showed us an artwork piece that he made from leftover project pieces and colored with dye stains.  “Upstairs” has a french cleat on the back for hanging and is finished with polyurethane.
Mike Peery brought in a slide showing a hawthorne crown and a walnut/cherry/maple cross in the Dennehey Design style that he made for his church.  It took 6 people to lift and install the cross.

Aaron Johnson brought in this walnut/cherry/maple corner table.  He did a lot of mitering on the joints, and when the splines started showing due to some heavy trimming, he just made them part of the design.  Looks nice!!!

St. Louis Woodworkers Guild contributions to the local community
 

Christmas Toys

The Guild has donated 204 toys to Toys for Tots for their midyear distribution activities. 

This leaves 394 items in inventory for distribution toward the end of the year. We have a goal of over 1200 toys for the year and it appears we may come up short without some additional help.

If you would like to help out by building toys at home, we can supply plans and materials.

Toy Committee Chair Rick Weitzman awaits toy donations at every monthly meeting and has toy parts if you let him know in advance of the meeting.

Toy production moves along, but we need more.  We had a good selection of toys collected at the June meeting but our hospital partners are starting to increase their requests, and our inventory of toys in the shed is starting to go down.

All woodworkers should be aware that we are donating these toys for children and that all toy donations must be fully sanded with NO splinters or sharp edges — ready for a final finish.  

Call me if you need toy parts and I will bring them to the meeting for pickup.

HSH Table Build Community Outreach

 

We are three months into our second year of building and donating tables to HomeSweetHome (HSH) Clients. The demand is high for the small dinning, end, coffee tables and nightstands we supply. Our tables are popular with the HSH Clientele. The tables move out of HSH’s inventory quickly.

Members can build tables for donation using Guild supplied wood and plans, or Members are free to use a mix of Guild supplied with other wood(s). Also, Members may use their own design(s) as-long-as the final product conforms to the dimensions shown on our website.

They are a variety of styles, sizes and finishes, suiting many purposes in the homes.  It is amazing what skilled woodworkers can do with offcuts of wood from a factory that would normally be discarded.

Faust Park Workshop Information

Important Notice from the SLWG Board regarding the Faust Park Shop

The Faust Park Shop is open only to SLWG members who have completed their Safety Training.  Minimum age for membership in the Guild is 16 years old.  Children less than 16 cannot be Members and therefore are not allowed in the shop under any circumstances.  Shop Monitors are authorized to enforce this major safety and liability issue.

  • To participate in the Workshop Safety Class or use the shop, you must have paid the current year Guild dues and have your current membership card with appropriate marking.
  • To use the Guild Workshop during open hours, you must have passed a Workshop Safety Class.

If you are a current or retired Boeing employee you can now contribute to the St. Louis Woodworker’s guild through the Boeing Gift Match program.  The guild is now an approved charitable organization with the Boeing program.  As an employee participant, your donation of $25.00 USD or more or the equivalent volunteer hours of 25 hours or more will be matched 1:1 by Boeing.  The maximum individual contribution is $6,000.00 or 6,000 volunteer hours.  Your contribution is tax deductible as long as you follow three simple steps:

Step 1:  Eligible Boeing employees or retirees first make a contribution directly to the guild

Step 2:  After making your donation go to Total Access and click on My Community Giving – GIVE – Gift Match on the Boeing Gift Match page.

Step 3:  Register your donation whether it’s monetary or volunteer hours and select The St. Louis Woodworker’s Guild and enter the total amount and the date of the contribution.
